Looking for higher-level conversation starters for your French class? This deck of French conversation questions focuses on hobbies and interests but gets students to take these topics to a deeper level by reflecting on and sharing their opinions. These are appropriate for B1/B2 students.

Who is this for?

✓ Students at an B1/B2 level

✓ Core, extended or immersion students

✓ The cards only work for in-person students but the slides work well for both online and in-person environments

This resource includes:

32 questions in total in a variety of formats :

  • Conversation Cards (standard – just the question on the card)
  • Conversation Cards (differentiated – sentence starters to answer the question provided)
  • Conversation Cards (large version)
  • Question du Jour (slides version of the questions)
  • Master list of questions
  • Questions as a worksheet (space for students to write down their answers)
  • Extension activity (students take what they’ve learned about their classmates during the activities to then write sentences about them)
  • Scoot game
  • 9 suggestions on how to use the cards

How it works:

Cards:

  • Print, cut and ideally laminate the cards
  • Many ways to use, for example:
    • Speed-friending – Group students into two lines facing one another (or inner and outer circles) and give each student a question card. Students ask and answer one another’s questions and then once everyone is done, one of the lines shift down a person so everyone is faced with someone new. Repeat over and over again so students get to answer lots of new questions.
    • Speaking warm-up – As students enter your classroom, give each one a question. When they sit down, they ask and answer questions with a partner.
    • Fast finishers – Those who finish their work early can take a few cards and answer the questions in writing.
    • Stations – Create a few stations around the room, each with a few question cards on the table. Have students move around in small groups to each of the stations and discuss the questions.
    • Mingling – Give each student a card and have them go up to someone else in the room to ask and answer one another’s questions. After they have finished, they swap cards and find someone else.
    • Walk and talk – Use the large version of the questions and post them around the room or on the board. Students walk around in pairs asking and answering the questions.

Slides:

  • Share slides in both an online or in-person class
    • Question du jour – Using the slides, each morning project one of the questions on the board. Ask individual students to answer the question in front of the class, or have students turn to the person next to them to discuss the question.
    • Exit cards – Project one of the questions on the board and have students write a written answer to the question and turn it in to you before leaving.
    • Breakout room conversations – Share one of the questions with students and then send them to a breakout room in small groups to discuss it.
