Kids have always found simple text output boring. I found the best way to hook kids into coding was graphics. They were mesmerized for hours when they found they could make the computer draw things. These activities introduce Turtle’s graphics functions one at a time until kids combine them to create simple still-life pictures.

As an added bonus, the Turtle module output uses a cartesian coordinate system so while they’re having fun they are also practising their math skills. And built-in program planning before coding lets you work with your kids one-on-one to ensure they understand.

Duration: Seven 75-minute periods.
